look at me, i rolled over!
look at me, i rolled over!,

hi, uh, we're just sitting here, both of us geeks at the computers. ella's on the floor on a blanket, entertaining herself. suddenly i take a quick look at the floor cuz it's all too quiet. she's on her side, happily playing with her toys. i say "neela! look!" and just then, she rolls all the way over, onto her tummy!
holy crap!! ella just rolled over.
anyway, then she did it like 5 more times, until she remembered she hates tummy time and started to screech!

singing

ella has two mobiles on her crib - one that plays classical music and one that plays nursery tunes. we didn't use to play the nursery tunes one much because it's pastel-y and she couldn't really see it. but now she can and enjoys the new tunes. the other night i was sitting next to the crib, helping her go to sleep, and i started to sing along to "rock a bye baby" on the mobile and ella just looked at me in utter shock, with a look that seemed to say "you're a *(%#$(#)# genius! you KNOW this song?!!!??!!"
also, as seen on flickr, ella took a bath with me last night - her first bath in the big-girl tub. she floats! how cool is that!

she giggled.

she actually giggled. because i was tickling her tummy. neela was right there too - she heard it - i didn't imagine it.
oh, also, at mom and baby yoga yesterday, she shouted something out at random, as she is so wont to do lately, that sounded a lot like "MOM!" i paused, mid-pose, to ask (very un-zen-like at yoga) everyone "am i crazy, or did she just say mom?!" and they all agreed, she said mom. ha.
speaking of which, soon it will be mother's day. and you know who is a mother? ya, that's right, me. i had a talk with ell about it - i.e. you have a lot of obligations on mother's day, what with having 2 moms and all. but the upside to all this is, on father's day, you pretty much have the day off!
i actually had a good idea for a mother's day gift for my own mother, for once. not telling. it's so rare that i have ANY idea what to get her, it's still worth mentioning.
i really should be in bed. asleep. crazy ass stability ball class in the morning. my quadriceps still haven't recovered, so tomorrow morning's class is going to be *hilarious.
that's it for today.

tired...

fellini baby
fellini baby,

there's no real story to go with this pic... ella and i were hanging out on the front step playing while neela raked the yard - good deal for me!!
keep reading the developmental milestones things and try not to get obsessed by them... "ella's not doing push ups yet... what could be wrong? we're not giving her enough tummy time, etc."
i have to go to bed. tomorrow morning is stability ball class again. can i balance with my knees on the ball and throw a ball in the air and catch it? no! but will i wobble around and try repeatedly until it's time to do a different exercise? yes!

ella went swimming!

on sunday we took ella swimming for the first time!
it was the chosen activity of the new friends and family playgroup - a playgroup for lesbian and gay parents and those who wish to join them. the a.c.t. pool in edmonton is meant for disabled people - the water is warmer than a typical pool and it's very accessible. they also have a smaller shallow pool that is even warmer - i swear it was warmer than our usual bath water for ella - which is excellent for babies!
so ella had her first dip. it was unfortunate timing because she really needed a nap, but she still did beautifully. we managed to eke out a couple of brief smiles, but mostly she maintained her standard expression - a mixture of caution, curiosity, and calm.
we were thrilled to meet *another* couple at the playgroup who have a baby boy who was born within a week of ella! these two guys were super nice and their baby boy was adorable - he was sound asleep in the pool! too cute.

hard at work

hard at work
hard at work,

not much is new with us. ella is growing and becoming a much more complex little baby. still wonderful and easy to care for, but certainly more complex. it's lovely.
because, obviously, we're computer geeks, ella has already become very accustomed to sitting at the computer and doing "work."
(she's particularly good at licking stamps, the little drooler!)
