ella's birthday was great! our little girl is one now. all the baby books/sites call her a toddler now. but i'll probably always call her baby. hopefully not in a dirty dancing kind of way. except maybe to say "nobody puts baby in a corner!"
ella wore a gorgeous tunic and pants that were embroidered and sequined. a gift from auntie lisa and family, from that great store with the terrible name, the frog kisser's den.
she was tired from all the excitement of the 50 party attendees, especially the 20-odd kids that were there! but she held it together, trooper that she is. she ran around and cuted it up. and she was frickin' hilarious with the cake. dipped her face in it and all.
our dear friends dorrie and bill and their little one lillia drove up from calgary just for the party, and we appreciate it soooo much. ditto to my mom and my brother and his wife for coming all the way from sk, just a couple of weeks after xmas. we had a wonderful weekend with them. ella soaked up their love like a little sponge, like she knew intuitively that she doesn't see them as often as her other family. smart girl.

last day
it's ella's last day in babydom. o god. that makes me weep.
tomorrow, my little girl turns one. there'll be a party. a BIG party. a lot of people. there'll be cake. she'll be wearing something fancy. there'll be presents. it's all going to be a very big deal. after all. this only happens once.
last year, we went to bed on january 13th. and woke up at 2:00 am cuz neela was having contractions. by 6:00 am we were en route to the hospital. and by 6:00 pm we had a girl, instead of a mysterious, thereoretical baby in a belly. it was the coldest day of the year. the coldest week of the year.
tonight, we'll go to bed. we likely won't wake up until we hear noises coming from her room around 7 am. we'll feed her with spoons and she'll feed herself. we'll get her dressed, but she'll help. and it's so freaking warm out no one really knows what to make of it. there isn't even any snow.

happy new year!
it's 2006. ella's first birthday is nigh. she's already trying to break free!
i'm sentimental about it all. what a year it's been. i was reminiscing about last year this time. how anxiously we were waiting for ella. how we could not think of anything else.
today it's the same. i think of little else. but our ella. she's made life so complicated in some ways. and so simple in others. in all the good ways. you know?
it's great, being a mom.
